WASHINGTON—Today Congressman Robert Aderholt pressed U.S. Department of Education Secretary Miguel Cardona on the proposed Title IX regulations allowing biological males to participate in women’s sports.

“Under these proposed rules, a mediocre male athlete can simply identify as a female and go in to dominate women’s sports. Simply put I just have to ask you, do you think this is fair to biological girls?” asked Congressman Aderholt.

“So we are proud of the Title IX proposal, and the current proposal that you’re speaking about is just that; it’s a proposal and we have a window open for comments that we are going to take very seriously,” said Secretary Cardona.

Later this year, the Biden administration will finalize the regulations that will likely force schools to allow biological males to compete in women’s sports. In addition, less than half of states currently have policies in place to protect the integrity of women’s athletic competitions.

The line of questioning comes as House Republicans are set to vote on the Protection of Women and Girls in Sports Act of 2023 this week that aims to strengthen Title IX’s protections for women, ensure a level playing field for female athletes, and protect the law from the Biden Administrations proposed regulations.

Secretary Cardona testified this morning before the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Labor, Health and Human Services, and Education on President Biden’s Department of Education budget request for fiscal year 2024. Congressman Aderholt chairs the subcommittee, which oversees the largest pool of non-defense discretionary spending in the federal government.
